Hap May focuses his practice on business and tax law. He also has significant experience in commercial litigation, real estate law, bankruptcy, business transactions, estate planning, probate, and asset protection.

As both an attorney and a CPA, Hap has held numerous court-appointed roles over the past 30 years. Among them, he was appointed by a state district court to help wind up the affairs of a Houston law firm. He was also appointed to serve as an arbitrator in a major real estate case involving more than 300 property owners and a settlement of more than $20 million. In addition, a federal judge appointed him as receiver for a perfume manufacturer involved in a Ponzi scheme.

Hap began his legal career by opening his own practice in 1991. He later merged his practice with those of other attorneys and helped found additional firms before joining Hoover Slovacek, LLP, as of counsel in 2011.

Over the years, Hap has served on the Consumer Arbitration Board for Chrysler Corporation and as editor of the American Bar Association’s annual report on insurance company taxation. He co-authored and lectured on “Texas Strategies Using Like-Kind Exchanges” for Professional Systems Institute, Inc. He also authored “How to Turn a Haystack Into a Pile of Needles: The Difficult but Surmountable Task of Proving Insolvency,” which appeared in the Winter 2010 issue of the Journal of the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees.
